Trans Day of Remembrance: Honoring Lives and Mobilizing for a Just Future

On this Trans Day of Remembrance, the Formerly Incarcerated, Convicted People and Families Movement (FICPFM) solemnly honors the memories of the trans individuals whose lives were tragically cut short. Today is not only a day for mourning but also for mobilizing action and demonstrating resilience. Each name we remember has a unique story and a life that deserves more.

In reflecting on these losses, we also celebrate the ongoing courage and vibrancy of the trans community. Their existence and achievements are powerful acts of defiance in a world that often lacks understanding and acceptance.

FICPFM recognizes the complex challenges faced by the trans community, particularly within the criminal legal system. Our commitment goes beyond mere acknowledgment; it extends into tangible support and advocacy. Earlier this year, FICPFM proudly awarded grants to two leading LGBTQ+ organizations, Black and Pink and House of GG. This funding supports their crucial work in empowering the LGBTQ+ community, mainly focusing on the sex worker community and nurturing the leadership of Transgender women of color in the U.S. South. These efforts align to foster a society where every trans person not only survives but thrives within our communities.

We invite you to learn more about these issues and the inspiring work being done to address them. Engage with community leaders like Dominique Morgan and explore her vital contributions. Recently, FICPFM supported events like the Black and Pink x WECARETN, a collaboration with Ms. Major, and the Black Trans Awareness Week launch in Houston with the Mahogany Project, Lavender Rights Project, and The Transgender District. These initiatives highlight our continuous effort to uplift and empower the voices and lives of trans individuals.

In memory of those we’ve lost and in solidarity with those who continue to fight, FICPFM is committed to a future where justice and inclusivity prevail.
